Design Guide - Rainmarks

Journal Entry: Wed May 20, 2015, 1:52 PM

Rainmarks

nRm/RmRm

Rainmarks are short, rain like streaks of color that can appear lighter or darker than the base coat.
They can be singular, or form brindle-like patterns on small areas of the body.
Rainmarks will always have a sharp, tapered edge, never blurry or blunt-ended.

Range

Rainmarks can occur on most areas of the body except the muzzle and legs.

Minimum / Maximum

At minimum, there should be at least 2-3 prominent rainmarks, while on the
right you can see the maximum amount. Placement and shape may vary!

Size, Shape, and Density

Rainmarks can vary in size, but are always linear in shape.
They can be normal lines, or tapper/break slightly like brindle!

Below you can see correct sizes for rainmarks.
You may have small ones accompany the larger ones,
but make sure to not make them all extremely small or they will not be accepted!

The rainmarks on the left are acceptable, while the ones on the right are too small and rounded.

The rainmarks on the left are acceptable, while the ones on the right are too thin.

They may also vary in shape, they can be very straight, or have a bit of jaggedness to them.
However, they should not resemble lightning bolts, and they should never connect or form tiger like patterns!

The first two examples on the left are acceptable, while the one on the right is much too jagged.
Rainmarks should generally look like streaks, not lightning bolts.

Left: Too tiger like, rainmarks should not run into each other or connect.
Right: Too symbol like, rainmarks should form natural patterns.

Color

Rainmarks can be light or dark, and must be a lighter/darker shade than what they go over (base coat or marking.)
Meaning if you have a normal brown Tokota, your rainmarks should not be red or bright orange.
Instead a nice shade of dark/light brown would be best. Rainmarks can also be black or white.

You can also give your rainmarks a slight gradient, or have three different colors on the same design.
This is within reason though; you cannot have rainbow rainmarks, or light to dark gradients. Subtlety is key!

Rainmarks + Other Markings

Rainmarks are flexible in that they show over most markings, including seal!
They must not blend together with other markings.

What they do not show over however is the following:
Piebald, restricted piebald, Van Gogh piebald, Monet piebald, restricted seal,
vitiligo, roan, shadowmarks, albinism, and minimum marked.

Can rainmarks interact with other markings such as accents/blanket like bearmarks do? Or is the 'must not blend together with other markings' thing supposed to mean that they can't?

That's an old rule and will be updated with the guide revisions -- rainmarks may interact with other markings. ^^

(The too thick / too thin indicators are reversed in the guide, making the "too thin" appear under the picture with the really thick rainmarks!)

Is it possible to have the rain marks around his eyes going down, almost like a tear track?

Random weird question about rainmarks: is it possible to have a mark above the eyes to make it seem like the totoka has "eyebrows"? Most of my characters I draw with human personifications like that since it is fun to create more expressions for them, but I wanted to make sure if I was going to include "eyebrows" as part of mine's original design or if it was just how I drew him later on.

I think that may be possible depending on how you go about it.
